Step 1: Start the stitch

Bring your needle up through the bottom layer of fabric, close to the edge, at the starting point of your seam.

Step 2: Create the first stitch

Next, take a small stitch from right to left, inserting the needle back into the fabric from the top, a short distance away from the starting point. This forms a loop on the edge of the fabric.

Step 3: Secure the stitch

Before pulling the thread all the way through, bring the needle back through the loop created in the previous step. Pull the thread tight to secure the stitch.

Step 4: Repeat the process

Continue this process along the entire length of the seam. Each stitch should form a loop on the edge of the fabric, with the needle passing through the loop to secure it.

Step 5: Maintain tension

As you stitch, maintain an even tension on the thread. The stitches should be snug but not too tight, allowing the fabric to lay flat.

Step 6: Finish the stitch

When you reach the end of the seam, take a few small backstitches to secure the thread. Knot the thread and trim any excess.

Step 7: Press the seam

After completing the blanket stitch, press the seam with an iron to set the stitches and create a neat finish.

Step 8: Inspect your work

Inspect the blanket stitch to ensure it's secure and evenly spaced along the seam. Make any necessary adjustments if the stitches are too loose or uneven.

And there you have it! You've successfully completed a blanket stitch. This versatile stitch is commonly used for edging and decorative purposes in sewing projects, such as finishing the edge of blankets, appliqué work, and attaching patches. With practice, you'll become more comfortable and proficient in executing this essential sewing technique.
