Step 1: Start the stitch

Bring your needle up through the fabric at the center point of where you want your woven wheel to be. This will be the starting point for your stitch.

Step 2: Make the spokes

Create several straight stitches radiating outward from the center point. These stitches will serve as the spokes of your wheel. The number of spokes can vary depending on the size and complexity of your design, but 5 to 8 spokes are common. Here is a stencil I made before starting to guide where I will stitch. I recommend starting out with a star-like since it's less cramped and easier for beginners.

Here is what is looks like when I fill it in with the Straight stitches

Step 3: Start weaving With your needle, weave the thread over and under the spokes in a circular motion, starting from the center and working your way outward. Continue weaving until you've covered all the spokes.

Make sure to NOT go through the fabric. Just push the needle underneath the stitches, over one of the arms and under the other arm. After each cycle you do, if you do 5 arms, the arms that are under and over will constantly keep switching.

Step 4: Secure the thread

Once you've completed weaving around all the spokes, bring your needle to the back of the fabric and make a small stitch to secure the thread. Knot the thread and trim any excess.

MY RESULT: Ideally we dont want the arms to be showing, however I made a mistake and made some of the arms too long, so make sure to make them roughly the same size or keep adding more layers of thread!

Step 5: Add finishing touches

If desired, you can add additional decorative elements to your woven wheel, such as beads or French knots at the center. Get creative and experiment with different colors and textures to achieve the desired look.

Step 6: Practice and refine

As with any embroidery stitch, practice is key to mastering the woven wheel stitch. Experiment with different thread colors, spacing of the spokes, and weaving techniques to achieve various effects and textures in your embroidery projects.

And there you have it! You've successfully created a woven wheel stitch. This versatile stitch can be used to create beautiful floral motifs, decorative accents, and intricate patterns in your embroidery projects. With practice and creativity, you can incorporate woven wheels into a wide range of embroidery designs.
